Monochrome Active Matrix

Carta Imaging Film offers a 50% improvement in contrast ratio over previous generation of ePaper displays. Carta supports E Ink’s new Regal technology which virtually eliminates the need for a full page refresh with page turns. All providing a more focused and improved reading experience.

 

Enhanced Readability

E Ink Carta delivers a dramatic 50% increase in contrast over earlier generations of ePaper, giving eReaders a contrast ratio close to that of a paperback book. The crisp text and detailed graphics are also highly readable in direct sunlight. Carta’s 16 levels of grey produce the sharpest rendering of images with smooth tones and rich detail.

 

Smoother Page Turns

E Ink Carta supports the new Regal technology for page updates. Regal virtually eliminates the need for a full page refresh giving the reader smoother page transitions for more focused reading.

 

Lowest Power Consumption

E Ink makes the lowest power displays in the eReader industry. Carta delivers the same low power display capability of all E Ink electrophoretic displays. Modules

E Ink Carta modules consist of a TFT (thin film transistor), Ink layer and Protective Sheet. In addition, product designers can include a touch solution, which is incorporated into the module stack. E Ink currently offers digitizer and capacitive touch solutions. Digitizer touch technology utilizes a stylus to update the display, with the touch sensor sitting under the TFT. Capacitive touch technology utilizes finger swipes, and is placed on top of the display module. E Ink’s touch solutions will not affect the reflectivity of the display.

Spectra

Color Active Matrix

E Ink’s color display for retail and electronic shelf tag labels. Spectra displays offer black and white + 1 color, enabling retail signage the ability to highlight promotions or logos with a pop of color.

 

Three Pigment Color

E Ink Spectra is the first three pigment electronic ink offered in mass production. EPDs using Spectra offer the same high-contrast, sunlight readable, low-power performance attributes of our other display types – now with a pop of color. The first generation of Spectra features black, white and red pigments, and we expect to release additional colors in the future.

 

Three Pigment Ink System

Spectra works similarly to our other inks, in that we apply a charge to our pigments, and to a top and bottom electrode to facilitate movement. However, Spectra is utilizing a microcup ink structure, rather than the microcapsules we are known for.

 

 

Spectra for ESL

By using electronic shelf labels (ESL) with E Ink’s technology, retailers have the ability to change pricing strategies as needed in real time, allowing them to stay one step ahead of competitors while attracting consumers based on changing market conditions. Spectra allows retailers to elevate the impact of their ESLs, by adding color to logos and quickly directing consumers’ attention to important information, such as product sales and promotions.

Aurora

Active Matrix ESL

E Ink Aurora displays feature an extended low-temperature operating range to allow retailers freedom to place electronic shelf labels next to the freezer – or in the freezer.

 

Cold Temperature

Aurora was developed to address retailers’ needs to integrate digital signage into cold temperature display cases, such as refrigerators or freezers. With operating temperature ranges of -15 to 10 degrees C and 0 to 50 degrees C, Aurora offers the same benefits as E Ink’s other display platforms – paper-like readability with a wide viewing angle. In addition, displays using Aurora are low power, running off of 2 small cell batteries, with a life-time of 5 years.

 

Aurora for ESL

Aurora has been tuned for non-eReader applications, and is ideal for electronic shelf labels (ESLs) and smart cards in the retail, medical and logistics markets.

Mobius

Flexible Active Matrix

Mobius is a new flexible display that uses flexible TFT technology that is better suited for large format ePaper devices, allowing designers to create a rugged, lightweight device.

 

Lightweight

The size of the display is one of the biggest determining factors on a product size. The weight of a glass based TFT grows as the square of its diagonal dimension. This can significantly affect the end weight of a device. However, plastic-based TFTs eliminate the need for glass, and can significantly reduce the weight of a display. A 13.3″ EPD using Mobius weighs ~63g. In contrast, a 13.3″ glass-based EPD display weighs 144g.

 

Technology Challenges

However, there are several challenges to manufacturing TFTs on non-glass substrates. E Ink and many other companies have worked on flexible displays for several years, and Mobius is the first plastic-based TFT product offered by E Ink in mass production. Sony developed this revolutionary new TFT technology, in partnership with E Ink. Mobius displays consist of a plastic TFT laminated to an E Ink front plane laminate (FPL).

Triton

Color Active Matrix

E Ink continues to revolutionize the ePaper market with E Ink Triton Imaging Film. Color ePaper displays enabled by Triton deliver high-contrast, sunlight readable, low-power performance that further closes the digital divide between paper and electronic displays. Triton enables color ePaper solutions, enhancing the visual experience for ePublishing markets such as eBooks, eNewspapers, eMagazines, and eTextbooks.

 

Enhanced With Color

Current Triton displays offer 16 levels of grayscale and are capable of displaying 4096 colors. Color displays made with Triton Imaging Film enable ultra low power and high mobility devices with a paper-like experience, ideal for image-rich information applications such as charts, graphs, maps, photos, comics and advertising. And just like E Ink’s monochrome ePaper products, Triton’s crisp text and detailed color graphics are fully viewable in direct sunlight.

 

Improved Speed

Both E Ink Triton and E Ink Pearl are 20% faster than previous generations of E Ink Imaging Film. Whether turning a page, selecting a menu, taking notes, or viewing an animation, Triton’s update performance will satisfy today’s user-interface product needs. This expands the ePaper experience and displays more dynamic content for signage, advertising, or browsing the Internet.

 

Tier 1 Ecosystem

E Ink has partnered with tier-1 companies such as Epson, Texas Instruments, Marvell, and Freescale Semiconductor to provide a best-in-class ecosystem of supporting electronics products. Our partners are working towards enabling E Ink’s newest generation of ePaper displays with solutions like dedicated discrete ePaper controllers and display power management integrated circuits. E Ink has continued to advance the state of the art and provide design flexibility to product manufacturers.

Recently, Seiko Epson Corporation, a global supplier of imaging products and semiconductor solutions, and E Ink Corporation, announced the first jointly developed controller IC to support E Ink Triton-enabled color ePaper displays. The S1D13524 is a high-performance EPD controller with a built-in color processor that enables seamless integration of color ePaper displays into a variety of devices.

 

Modules

An E Ink Triton Module is comprised of a TFT backplane, Ink layer, Color Filter layer and Protective Sheet. E Ink offers a Triton color module with 800×600 color pixel resolution, 16 levels of grayscale and 4096 colors. Pearl Imaging Film from E Ink offers two advantages over other technologies. First, it provides a contrast range that’s 50% greater than our previous generation film, so text is more readable as it “pops” off the page. Second, it’s faster, so reading is more natural and pages turn more quickly.

Segmented Solutions

E Ink Segmented displays are ultra-low power, thin, and rugged. E Ink’s unique reflective display technology is sunlight readable and can display an image with no power. This enables engineers and designers to add displays to products where power and space limitations have made it impossible to do so before.

 

Disruptive Benefits

The disruptive benefits of E Ink Segmented displays include:

  • Ultra Low Power –E Ink displays are bi-stable, drawing power only when updating the display. Consuming approximately 0.5 micro amps per cm2 while switching the display, E Ink displays require zero power to display a static image.
  • Thinness – E Ink Segmented display thickness can be between 380 and 560 microns.
  • Rugged – E Ink Segmented displays are non-glass and shatterproof for added durability.
  • High contrast – E Ink Segmented displays are daylight readable with a 180 degree viewing angle.
  • Design – E Ink Segmented displays can be manufactured in any 2D shape such a circle, triangle, or abstract shape, enhancing industrial designs. In addition, E Ink’s unique capabilities allow for the foreground and background to be reversed from black on white or white on black.

 

Our Products

E Ink offers two types of Segmented displays: Segmented Display Cells (SDCs), and Segmented Display Modules (SDMs).

 

SDCs are independent display cells that do not include any embedded electronics; they can be driven at either 5V or 15V. Typically, SDCs are used in simpler designs with lower segment counts and fewer pin outs. Designs that have adequate space and less restrictive PCB integration needs are ideal for SDC applications.

 

SDMs include an integrated E Ink display driver for a complete display solution, typically for designs that have demanding integration requirements. SDMs simplify the integration effort by reducing the number of pin outs required between the MCU and display. As a result, less space is needed for connection to the PCB.
